Dressmaking for complete beginners

Many adults would love to make their own clothes yet have never used a sewing machine. That starting point is welcome here. No previous experience is needed, and teaching covers the basics before any garment work begins.

The group is limited to 10 learners, so there is time to practise, ask questions and correct small mistakes as you go. The pace stays steady across the eight weeks while you build confidence with measuring, machine work and simple construction, and the neater finishes come later.

This beginner dressmaking course in London is also open to adults who want a slow, supported return to machine sewing after a long break. If you feel unsure around a machine, you can learn at a comfortable pace and see how each skill links to the dress.

Want a shorter first step before committing to eight weeks? The two-hour beginner taster covers machine setup and simple stitching, with a straightforward project to take home. Choose the eight-week course when you want sustained help across a full garment, with regular Wednesday evening sessions that build week by week.

What you’ll learn, in order

The planned project for the term is a sleeveless button-front collared dress with a flared skirt and optional pockets. It covers measuring, drafting a pattern, cutting, shaping and finishing, in the order you would use them on a real garment:

1. Take measurements and draft a simple pattern to your size
2. Place pattern pieces, respect grainlines, cut the bodice and skirt
3. Sew darts and seams, press as you go and check the fit
4. Attach the collar and facings for a neat neckline
5. Make the button front, with care over spacing
6. Join bodice to skirt, add pockets and finish the seams
7. Hem, press and review the finishing touches

You practise each stage in the room and see how the parts of the dress fit together. Everyone progresses at a different pace, so the course aims for solid skills and clear next steps, and a finished dress is not guaranteed for everyone.
