Intermediate Sewing Course in London

Take your sewing further

This intermediate sewing course is a private lesson built around the skill or project you bring. It is for adults who can already use a sewing machine and want Grace’s help with garment making, fitting or more complex construction. Lessons are arranged individually, and part of every fee helps fund free classes for local children.

Your project, one to one

A private lesson gives Grace time to look closely at your technique, work out why something is going wrong and show you the next step. The National Careers Service dressmaker profile ties garment work to accurate measuring, pattern use, fabric cutting, fitting and alterations. Your lesson can concentrate on whichever part of that process your project needs.

Lessons take place at Edmonton Green Library, 36-44 South Mall, London N9 0TN, an address listed by Enfield Council. Grace’s Sewing Studio CIC trades as London Sewing Courses and uses its adult teaching to support a defined community purpose.

Who private lessons suit

Private lessons suit adults who already understand the machine and want better control, accuracy and construction. You might bring a garment idea, a fitting question or a more complex project, and the lesson is arranged individually so it can match your pace.

Possible areas to work on

  • Pattern work, fitting and garment construction, matched to your current level.
  • A more complex garment, or one construction problem taken step by step.
  • Personal feedback on accuracy and finish, and on the next technique to practise.

How your lessons work

Consult

Tell Grace what you can already do, where you get stuck and what you want to make. That first conversation sets a realistic focus for the lesson.

Personalise

You work one to one at your own pace, and each demonstration and piece of feedback relates to your garment or technique.

Create

Build confidence with garment construction, pattern work, fitting or finishing. The City of London Adult Skills service lists higher-level sewing, fashion and personal projects as the routes on from beginner learning.

Practise and give back

Leave knowing what to practise before your next lesson. A portion of your fee supports our free children’s sewing classes.

What our students say

The tote bag is nice, I love the details. The class was amazing, I’m so happy to have met new people.

Anna, adult learner

Grace, you have been a breath of fresh air for me. Your sewing classes are therapeutic for me, especially going through chemotherapy.

Elizabeth, adult learner

We teach the big ones to sew, so the little ones have a safe place to learn, stitch and feel looked after.

Improving a garment skill can also help you repair clothes and keep them in use. In 2025, WRAP reported that 82.2% of repaired items displaced a new purchase. Grace helps you make careful decisions about construction and alteration, and each lesson also contributes to the children’s programme.

Booking a private lesson

Pick a time on the private lesson booking page. If you are unsure whether private guidance is the right next step, contact Grace with a short description of your project and your current experience, and she can advise you.

If you need to cancel, doing it in writing at least 48 hours before the lesson makes you eligible for a full refund. You can also pass the booking to someone else at no extra charge, as long as you email before the lesson starts. The refund policy covers the rest.

Common questions

Is the intermediate sewing course taught one to one?

Yes. It is private one-to-one guidance, so Grace can focus on your current skill level and the project you choose.

What experience should I already have?

You should be able to thread and operate a sewing machine and have finished some simple sewing work. If those steps are not yet comfortable, begin with our sewing classes for beginners.

How long and how often are private lessons?

Private lessons are scheduled individually to suit you and your project. Contact Grace to talk through the current options, since there is no fixed timetable.

Do I need to bring materials?

Grace discusses the project and any materials with you before the lesson. That way you avoid buying unsuitable fabric or notions for the technique you want to learn.

How does my lesson help fund children’s classes?

A portion of every adult lesson fee supports our free sewing classes for children and teens. This reflects the community purpose of Grace’s Sewing Studio CIC, described in CIC Regulator guidance.

What can I work on in an advanced private lesson?

Garment construction, fitting, pattern work, alterations and finishing are all possible. Grace agrees a realistic focus with you based on your experience and the project you bring.
