Sewing Classes Near Me for Adults in London
Learn to sew, and meet people doing the same
Grace teaches adults at Edmonton Green Library in two ways: a small-group class for beginners and private lessons for improvers. You learn practical skills at your own pace, and a portion of every adult fee helps fund free classes for local children.

Find your adult sewing class
If you want to make your own clothes, the eight week dressmaking course meets at NYCC, 39 St James Chambers, N9 0UD. That is a different venue from Edmonton Green Library, where the beginner classes and private lessons are held, so check your travel before you book.
You can book a beginner class or a private lesson directly on Grace’s booking calendar.

Two-hour taster
Beginner adult sewing course
A supportive group class for complete beginners and adults coming back after a break. You learn machine setup, basic stitches, seams and the essential tools while you make a simple project.

Improvers and advanced private lessons
Private one-to-one lessons for adults building on skills they already have. Bring a garment idea, a fitting question or a more complex project, and work through it with Grace at a pace that suits you.

Free children’s sewing classes

How the free classes work
Learning something new as an adult
These sewing courses for adults are small and personal. Grace teaches the person in front of her, so the class goes at a pace that suits the people in it.
The 2025 Adult Participation in Learning Survey found that 94% of recent learners reported at least one benefit, including confidence, personal development and enjoyment of learning. Two of Grace’s learners say what the class meant to them further down this page.
How adult classes work
Pick a class
The beginner class suits you if you have little or no experience. If you already sew and have a project or technique in mind, book a private lesson.
Work at the machine
You work directly with the machine, tools and fabric. The National Careers Service lists machine use, pattern work, measuring, cutting, stitching and fitting among the practical skills of dressmaking.
Group or one to one
Beginners learn in a small, friendly group. Improvers have one-to-one time, so Grace can look closely at the project and explain the next step.
Help fund a child’s place
A portion of your fee supports free six-week sewing courses for disadvantaged children and teens aged 9 to 18.
What our adult learners say
The tote bag is nice, I love the details. The class was amazing, I’m so happy to have met new people.
Anna, adult learner
Grace, you have been a breath of fresh air for me. Your sewing classes are therapeutic for me, especially going through chemotherapy.
Elizabeth, adult learner
Supported by our community
We teach the big ones to sew, so the little ones have a safe place to learn, stitch, and feel looked after.
The studio’s motto, thread change with every stitch, means your class does two jobs. It helps you make practical progress, and it helps Grace keep a safe creative space open for young people, because adult fees support the children’s programme.
Classes take place at Edmonton Green Library, 36-44 South Mall, London N9 0TN, and Enfield Council lists the venue and its current opening hours. Grace’s Sewing Studio CIC trades as London Sewing Courses and has a community purpose, as the CIC Regulator’s guidance describes for this kind of company.
Choose the level that feels right, or contact Grace if you are unsure where to begin.
Common questions
I have never sewn before. Which class should I choose?
Start with our sewing classes for beginners. Grace begins with machine setup, tools and basic stitches, so you need no previous experience.
Do I need to bring equipment or materials?
Not for the beginner class, where the machine, tools and basic materials are provided. For a private improvers lesson, Grace agrees any project materials with you beforehand. The same skills let you mend clothes, and in 2025 WRAP found that four in five repaired clothing items displaced a new purchase.
How do adult sewing classes support children?
A portion of every adult class fee helps fund our free sewing classes for children and teens. The programme gives disadvantaged young people a safe place to learn to sew and to feel looked after.
How do I choose a class, and where are sessions held?
Choose the beginner class for the foundations, or private improvers and advanced lessons if you already use a machine and want focused help with a project. Both are at Edmonton Green Library, 36-44 South Mall, London N9 0TN, listed on the Enfield Council library page. If you are comparing evening sewing classes London-wide, ask Grace what is currently available.
